Vdot Systems Rugged Multifunction Display in Production

Vdot Systems, Inc., an avionics manufacturer, avionics system integrator, embedded software developer, and flight simulation provider, announces the start of production for its rugged multifunction display (MFD). The MFD provides real-time embedded computing, graphics rendering, operator controls and high resolution display for rugged military applications.

The MFD is configured as a "smart" subsystem and it includes an Intel® dual-core processor, an ATI 2D/3D graphics processor, a mass memory module, a configurable I/O module, and a full set of drivers compatible with Wind River's VxWorks real-time operating system. For integration flexibility, the MFD offers a wide range of interface types including MIL-STD-1553, USB, Ethernet, and discrete I/O. The active matrix liquid crystal display features anti-reflective, anti-glare treatments and a selectable dual-mode backlight that provides sunlight-readable operation for day and night vision imaging systems (NVIS)-compatible operation for night. External video inputs are available for generating sensor video displays with overlaid graphics. The MIL-erasable solid state drive memory is sized to house terrain and map databases for 2D moving maps and 3D synthetic vision. Software updates and user-defined map databases can be uploaded using a standard USB plug-in memory device.

The MFD is suitable for a wide range of avionics integrations given its extensive internal processing and memory capacities and the variety of standard military avionics interfaces offered. Flexibility is designed into the MFD's I/O module to enable it to be adapted to an even wider range of military and commercial interfaces. Customers have the options to embed their own or third-party software applications into the MFD, or to use Vdot Systems' engineering services for developmental assistance, or for supply of turn-key hardware/software/system solutions.
